Common Causes of Car Accidents

Apr 27, 2023

Car accidents are a common occurrence on the roads and can have devastating consequences. Even with all of the safety features available today, every driver is still at risk of being involved in a car accident due to a multitude of potential causes. This blog explores some of the leading factors that lead to auto collisions.

Distracted Driving

Most drivers do not realize that a single moment of distraction can lead to tragic and life-altering consequences. From phone calls, texting, checking emails, eating and drinking, and even applying makeup while behind the wheel, no matter how safe the vehicle may be, there are countless distractions that take driver's attention away from the road. Distracted driving poses a serious threat to all road users, including other drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.

As a driver, it's important to remain mindful of your surroundings and to avoid engaging in any activity that could impair your ability to drive safely. If possible, put your phone on silent or on airplane mode when driving. Also, set aside some time before getting on the road to focus on personal grooming and other activities that could be potential distractions.

Speeding

High speeds clearly reduce a driver's reaction time in case of unexpected occurrences on the road, which can increase the likelihood of collisions or loss of control, especially when navigating tricky turns or sudden stops. In addition, being involved in an accident while speeding increases the likelihood of severe injuries or fatalities.

To avoid such accidents, always adhere to the recommended speed limits and be constantly and keenly aware of your surroundings. You should also keep the car's brakes and tires in top-notch condition to ensure maximum responsiveness during sudden stops or in the event emergency maneuvers may need to be performed.

Drunk Driving

According to NHTSA, thirty two people lose their lives every day in drunk-driving accidents in the United States. Alcohol consumption impairs one's ability to make rational decisions, slows down reaction time, and often decreases coordination. As a result, an impaired driver may engage in dangerous behaviors behind the wheel, such as swerving, speeding, and failing to stop at red lights or stop signs. Such actions can easily result in car accidents, impacting not only the drivers involved, but also innocent bystanders and passengers.

Always plan ahead before drinking and make alternative arrangements for transportation, such as using ride-sharing services or designating a sober driver. Taking such precautions can help reduce your chances of getting involved in a crash and/or getting arrested for a DUI.

Weather Conditions

Adverse weather conditions can significantly affect road safety, increasing the likelihood of car accidents. When roads become wet, slippery, or icy, vehicles lose traction, more easily leading to skids and collisions. Heavy rains and floods that cause water accumulation may also lead to hydroplaning, and fog and snow can reduce visibility making it harder to see the road ahead.

To stay safe during adverse weather, drivers need to adjust their driving behavior, maintain a safe following distance, slow down, and always stay alert. Also, drivers should use appropriate headlights and windshield wipers for the given weather conditions.

Road Conditions

Poor road conditions such as potholes, uneven pavement, poorly designed intersections, and inadequate signage sometimes contribute to higher risk of car accidents. When roads aren't properly maintained, drivers often choose to navigate around hazards that can damage their vehicles or cause them to lose control. Additionally, poor visibility due to overgrown foliage or poor lighting can further exacerbate the issue. If you're driving in such conditions, maintain safe speeds for such roads and watch out for debris or obstructions on the road.
